Reminds me a little of the structures that sometimes comes when one is experimenting with Quaternions.
A rather interesting movie, actually.
Quaternions are 4-dimensional fractals - even if we only see a 3-dimensional cut of it.
When the figure changes form then a "walk" in the 4-dimensional direction is performed.
Then they complicate things a little by also rotating the 3-dimensional figure.
One can of course see it the other way around - that they are complicating things by moving into the fourth dimension.
After all it is probably more easy to understand a normal 3-dimensional rotation.
